The world beyond Rensselaer awaits through study abroad, international exchange and other academic opportunities abroad. Students may participate in an affiliated exchange program with a partner university or enroll in a non-affiliated study abroad program at institutions worldwide.

Daniel Kang '20 - Biomedical engineering major with a concentration in mechanics

For Daniel's Semester Away he decided to enhanced his academic portfolio by attending Télécom Physique in Strasbourg, France.

Télécom Physique is a French engineering school that was established in 1970. Areas of study include image processing and computer vision; software and network engineering; automation and robotics; biophysics; electronics; photonics; and physics and modeling. 

In addition to the courses Kang took, he also secured a research opportunity with ICube Laboratories on the Multiscale Materials and Biomechanics team.

Grayson Gerlich '20 - Biomedical Engineering

Grayson Gerlich ’20, a biomedical engineering major with an imaging and instrumentation concentration, secured a spring semester away research internship at the Center for Structural Biochemistry (CBS) in Montpellier, France.

Throughout his research internship, Gerlich was able to apply his imaging knowledge from his major to perform cutting-edge experiments with his team. “At the risk of sounding cliché, my spring away opportunity was the most influential moment in my life so far,” said Gerlich.

Peter Chinburg ’21 - Mechanical Engineering major with an entrepreneurship minor, secured a fall semester away co-op at Ecosystem in New York City.

Ecosystem is a Canadian-based company that focuses on large-scale energy efficiency retrofitting for old buildings and campuses. Since 1993, Ecosystem has grown to include three locations in Canada —Quebec City, Montreal, and Toronto — and two locations in the United States — Boston and New York City. They have improved over 1,600 infrastructures that has saved $527 million in energy costs.

Sydney did a fall semester away internship at Pacific Northwest National Labs under the Chemical Dynamics Initiative in Richland, Washington.

With over 5,300 scientists, engineers, and professional staff members, Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL) is a leader in scientific discovery, sustainable energy, and national security. Founded in 1965, PNNL is organized into five core areas, including chemical and materials sciences; computational and mathematical sciences; earth and biological sciences; engineering; and user facilities and advanced instrumentation.

Lisa Sulmasy ’21 - Mechanical Engineering major, secured a fall semester away internship at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC) at the University of New Hampshire (UNH).

As a mechanical engineering major placed in the ocean engineering department at CCOM/JHC, Sulmasy had the opportunity to work on projects that encompassed the ocean as well as mechanical and electrical engineering, offering a multidisciplinary approach to real-world engineering projects.

Lucretia Shumate '21 - Dual biochemistry/biophysics and bioinformatics/molecular biology major, Lucretia secured a fall semester away research internship at Magee Women’s Research Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Solving real-world problems and impacting women’s lives every day, Magee-Women’s Research Institute and Foundation focuses their research efforts on reproductive development, pregnancy and newborn medicine, infectious disease, gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, women’s cancers, and women’s wellness.

Throughout her internship, Shumate worked on two independent research projects including histone antibody staining of C. elegans gonads in order to evaluate histone presence in aging gonads. The second project was analyzing gene influence of recombination frequency on C. elegans Chromosome I, using SNP mapping.

Anthony Mannino '20 - Physics major with a minor in economics, secured a fall semester away research opportunity at Boston University’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.

“The research I conducted at Boston University involved collecting and analyzing data to investigate the effects of legislation regarding genetically modifying foods (GMOs) on the prevalence of undernourishment in approximately 40 countries,” said Mannino. Throughout his semester away experience, Anthony enjoyed the freedom and flexibility to make changes to simplify the data collection process in order to be more efficient.
